Fish life cycle, habitat and foraging preferences, and other fish behavior and development studies. My research centers on the early life history of fish. In particular I have examined the development of the neural retinal and how ambient light conditions determine the structure and function of the retina in different species. My current model species is lake sturgeon, and my research methods have included: 1) behavior: response to controlled visual stimuli; natural responses to food, predators, 2) histology: thin sectioning; light and electron microscopy, and 3) molecular biology: PCR, DNA sequencing, fragment analysis, population genetics, in situ hybridization.
