Professional Focus
Microbial Ecologist, studying the Carbon Biogeochemistry of natural waters. Currently, he conducts research on the carbon cycle of Lake Michigan and the ecology of submerged sinkholes in Lake Huron, and operates a time-series lake observatory. He teaches an undergraduate class in Marine Biology, graduate courses in Microbial Ecology and Biogeochemistry, mentors undergraduate and graduate students, and serves on the board of 2 international science journals (Journal of Plankton Research and Aquatic Microbial Ecology). He coordinates NASA’s Michigan Space Grant Consortium programs for the GVSU, and hopes to continue studying Earth’s lakes as sentinels of change focusing on the changing carbon cycle in one of our most vital global commons: freshwater.
